History Uncovered

We recently received a message from somebody converting an old pub in Castle Road, Kentish Town, London into offices.

During renovations a large piece of tiling work was discovered. We believe it was tiled by W.B. Simpson and Sons between 1870-1890, originally made in their offices at the time in St. Martin’s Lane.
We are delighted to hear that the piece is being preserved and can be seen from the street through the window of those offices. The pub is thought to have been the site of a medieval castle so is steeped in history.

The work quotes “Beneath the castle walls the lists are set. Knighthood and chivalry and beauty met.”
